Research by the British Dental Health Foundation and Invisalign has shown that more than a quarter of Brits are unhappy with their smiles- so much so that it has a detrimental effect on our confidence and relationships.
Three quarters of those asked said that their confidence would improve if they had a better smile, with 44% saying their feelings towards their smile means they have low confidence. In fact, one in ten has said that it has negatively affected their personal relationships.
70% of those asked were so unhappy with their smile that they admitted to never smiling in photos. The results showed that it is actually men rather than women who can’t stand their own teeth and would admit to retouching a photo to improve the look of their smile.
Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter OBE, explained how to achieve that healthy smile:
“Improving our smile is something that can be done at any age and with the emotional and proven health benefits of having a healthy smile clear, it’s never too late to do something about yours.
“It can be the first thing you notice about a person, and it certainly creates a good first impression. That is why getting the basics right can go a long way.
“Brushing for two minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on how often you eat and drink sugary foods and drinks and visiting your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend, will help develop good oral health. Other habits such as chewing sugar-free gum after meals and using interdental brushes can also improve your oral health.”
