Today, the UK’s leading oral health charity announced the launch of Mouth Cancer Action Month – the yearly campaign that is dedicated to raising awareness of mouth cancer.
This November, the British Dental Health Foundation along with the Mouth Cancer Foundation, will be calling on dentists, doctors and pharmacists to spread the word about a disease that tragically claims more victims than testicular and cervical cancer combined.
With the message, ‘If in doubt, get checked out,’ the charity aims to cut the number of cases through early detection and treatment.
With mouth cancer claiming the lives of one person every five hours, patients are urged to regularly visit their dentist and make an appointment if they start to notice anything unusual. This includes ulcers that don’t heal within three weeks, white or red patched in the mouth and any unusual lumps or swellings.
Founder of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, Dr Vinod Joshi, said:
“Head and neck cancers are particularly vicious and debilitating when detected late. Patients suffer for the rest of their lives, and require much post-operative and psychological care. The management of these cancers is a huge drain on medical resources. Mouth Cancer Action Month is about saving lives and educating the public about the early signs of the disease.”
If you notice any of the symptoms or would like to find out more information about the disease, please make an appointment with us here at GDC Liverpool and we’ll be happy to help.
