What Is Fluoride?

You’re told to use toothpaste that contains the stuff, but do you actually know what it is? Well, Gentle Dental Care are here to tell you all about fluoride, and what it can do for your dental health.

What is it?

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in drinking water and in a lot of foods. It’s an essential ingredient when keeping teeth healthy! Some foods contain Fluoride, but the biggest source is from drinking water. Only a few places have enough natural fluoride in their water supply to benefit dental health. In many areas, fluoride is added to the water instead. You can find fluoride in food like fish and also other drinks like tea!

How can fluoride aid in maintaining good dental health?

Fluoride strengthens the enamel on your teeth, meaning that they are more resistant to problems like decay. The natural mineral also helps to lower the amount of harmful acids produced by bacteria on the teeth, thus lowering the risk of other oral health problems like gum disease.

Did you know? The fluoridation of water has been proven to reduce tooth decay by 40-60%! Over 300 million people drink fluoridated water supplies worldwide.

Why use fluoride toothpaste?

By using toothpaste containing fluoride, you are giving yourself extra protection against decay and cavities. It’s one of the most effective ways of protecting your teeth!

There are different recommended dosages for adults and children, which is why there are separate toothpastes specifically for kids.

It’s important for parents to supervise their children when using a toothpaste that contains fluoride, ensuring that;

I’ve been told that I’m at extra risk of tooth decay, what next?

For those who are more at risk, your dentist may suggest a high-strength fluoride toothpaste and/or a fluoride mouth rinse to protect from any further damage. There is also the option for fluoride varnish to be applied every 6 months to fend off decay.

Dentist Tip: Don’t rinse out your mouth after brushing with a fluoride toothpaste! This helps the fluoride stay on your teeth for longer.
