Getting Dentures – What to Expect

Earlier this month, we provided a brief overview of what to expect when getting dental implants. Now, we’re going to do the same for dentures! To find out more, take a look at our denture guide.

What are dentures?

Dentures are replacement teeth that can be taken out of your mouth and put back in again. They fit closely over the gums to replace missing teeth, and prevent problems caused by gaps such as difficulty eating, gum pain and weak facial muscles. You can get full or partial dentures depending on the position and number of teeth you want replacing.

What does the process of getting dentures involve?

The first stage involves getting teeth impressions taken, before coming back to the practice for a bite registration (to make sure that your bite is fully aligned). The next stage is re-visiting the practice for a ‘try in’, and then finally getting your dentures fitted. Occasionally, you might have to come back for a second ‘try in’ stage, but this is just to ensure that you have the best possible result!

Here at GDC Liverpool, we also make ‘immediate’ dentures which only require two visits. This involves an impression stage and a fitting stage. You can find out more about this particular treatment during your initial consultation.

What types of dentures do you offer?

We have a wide range of partial and complete denture options available at Gentle Dental Care. As well as our immediate dentures, we also offer acrylic, cobalt chrome and implant-based dentures. Another pioneering option is a Valplast denture, also known as a ‘flexible denture’. Made from a sturdy nylon resin, they come with a lifetime guarantee and offer a fantastic fit without the use of a denture adhesive.

During your consultation, we can discuss which option would be best for you depending on your budget and dental requirements.

How much do dentures cost?

With prices starting from just £495 for a partial acrylic denture, and £595 for a full upper or lower denture, our treatment options are affordable and accessible.

How long do dentures last?

Dentures can last for several years as long as you look after them well enough. Typically, people have their dentures for 5 to 8 years, but they do have the potential to last longer than this.

How do I keep them clean?

Cleaning your dentures is just as easy as cleaning your natural teeth! But instead of using toothpaste, the Oral Health Foundation recommends brushing dentures with a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Ideally, you should soak them in a denture-cleaning solution on a daily basis, preferably overnight unless you’re advised to wear them during that time. This should help to prevent the build up of tartar, help you maintain a fresh smile and keep your dentures in use for years to come!
